Property prices

House prices vary across the country. In London houses and flats are very expensive and you'd need to earn at least £35,000 to buy a one bedroom flat. Buying outside of London can be much cheaper.

As well as the purchase price, you'll also need between £2000 and £2500 to pay for things like solicitor's fees and the other one-off costs of buying.

For information on property prices in particular parts of London or other parts of the country you could contact local estate agents. You can search for these on www.yell.com or in the telephone directories in your local library. Some websites you could try include:

Click on Mortgage costs to find out what the repayment costs will be for different property prices.

For details of low cost home ownership schemes that can make buying cheaper, click on LCHO.
