Buying your own home outside of London

Whether or not you can buy your own home will largely depend on where you want to live, what income you earn and what your savings are.

Property prices have been rising quite steeply in most parts of the country over the last few years - which has made it difficult for many people to afford home ownership.

You can get an idea of property prices around the country by clicking on the following websites:

These websites only give details of property prices if you are buying on the open market.

There are some low cost home ownership schemes that can help people to buy homes at a lower than usual cost. To find out which housing associations are offering low cost home ownership in the area you are interested in contact the local office of the Housing Corporation for a list. Details of the local offices can be found by clicking on www.housingcorp.gov.uk.

Some councils also operate such schemes. Contact the local Housing Advice Centre to find out. Details of where they are should be on the council's website which can be found by clicking on www.oultwood.com/localgov/uk.

If you click on Buying a home you can get information to help you:

  • consider whether home ownership might be right for you
  • understand how Low Cost Home Ownership schemes work and whether you might be eligible
  • apply for Low Cost Home Ownership
  • understand mortgages and whether you might be able to get one
  • go through the process of buying.
